St. Louis, MO - June 2010 Expo Technologies, leaders in Pharma PAT development and implementation, announce the ePAT801, fluorescence based PAT, complete with system validation tools and product life cycle documentation. President of Expo Technologies, Paul Davies, explained why the company added fluorescence to its PAT portfolio. "Higher potency and therefore lower dose formulations are pushing the widely utilised NIR techniques to their recognised limits of detection. Fluorescence spectroscopy traditionally offers extra sensitivity but the challenge of engineering a suitable process capable instrument was always restrictive. Expo Technologies LLC have been able to transfer the expertise learned in creating the successful ePAT NIR range and produce a complimentary fluorescence spectrometer offering the same speed, ease of use and implementation on line, as other spectroscopic techniques. The ePAT801 meets all of our goals and is already showing 2 orders of magnitude better detection." The ePAT801 fluorescence spectroscopy based PAT can be installed on blender, in tablet feed frame, even in bio-fermentations. Typical limits of detection are in the order of 0.01% or even lower. Typical measurement/data processing times are in the order of 50 ms. Davies also explained additional benefits of the ePAT 801 and emerging trends in the implementation of PAT, "The data modelling and model maintenance requirements with fluorescence are much simpler compared to say NIR, MIR. Typically an SLR is all that is required for quantitative analysis." He went on to explain "We are also seeing a growing need for faster in process measurement times from the technology we are implementing. Time between data points in the order of seconds is no longer sufficient, particularly with the demands of dynamic process measurement point such as in a tablet fed frame.. Whether it's NIR, MIR, UV-Vis, Fluorescence, the measurement plus processing times need to get faster, in the millisecond time frame. We have set ourselves the target of achieving that with all of our PAT devices or we do not adopt the technology."
